• VPN software creates a virtual NIC on your device (endpoint 1).
• Connects to the VPN server running VPN software or hardware (endpoint 2)
• The virtual cable connecting the two endpoings is called a VPN tunnel.
• Your device has two IP addresses one from the local DHCP server and the other from the virtual NIC.
